Grupo ECIL
Where it started — no formal training, just curiosity
I got my start in IT in December 1999, at Grupo ECIL in Luanda. I had no formal training in computing — I was curious about it, and that was enough to get me in the door through a referral. I started by shadowing an existing technician rather than being trained in any structured way.
The environment ran on coaxial, BNC-style networking with Windows 95 workgroups, and part of the job was assembling "Linha Branca" — white-box PCs the company sold as a cheaper alternative to pre-built machines. I stayed at Grupo ECIL into 2004, overlapping with the start of university.
1999 in one sentence: No training, no plan — just curiosity about computers, and a way in.
